Serving as the architectural centerpiece of the ancient, 15th-century city of Khalifatabad, this monumental structure was commissioned by the Sufi saint and general Khan Jahan Ali. Built on the rugged edge of the Sundarbans mangrove forest during the Bengal Sultanate era, the mosque operated not only as a massive spiritual gathering space but also as an administrative hub and madrasa. Today, it stands as the most impressive Sultanate-era monument in the country and a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a quiet, enduring testament to medieval Islamic urban planning in South Asia. Despite its famous Bengali name—which translates to "Sixty Domes"—the massive terracotta brick structure actually features 77 low domes across its roof, framed by four additional domes crowning its corner towers. The "sixty" refers to the forest of slender stone pillars inside that support the expansive, arched ceiling. The thick, tapered walls, which were built in the Tughlaq style, were cleverly designed to let in light and control the temperature. This made the inside of the building a dark, naturally cooled sanctuary that protected worshippers from the hot tropical weather.
Visitor Tips
- •As an active place of worship, conservative dress is strictly required; ensure your shoulders and knees are covered, and be prepared to remove your shoes before stepping into the main prayer hall.
